From Oakland to Iceland: A Hip Hop Homecoming is a documentary about Illugi Magnússon (DJ Platurn), an Iceland native, raised in California  since the age of 7. The film explores his 3 week homecoming tour playing in Iceland, where he exhibits his talents as a scratch/trick DJ, among other things. The film has been screened by RUV TV in Iceland, Moviola Canada and on MTV’s Scandinavian website. The director is DJ Platurn’s sister.

“This is a pleasant surprise”, says director Thórdarson in a chat with ICN, “especially as we did this with next to no money. I got the idea for the poster long before I finished the film. I wanted to play with the “fish out of water” theme and I wanted the poster to feature elements of our birthplace. I asked Illugi to send me pictures of him with a turntable in hand, from Oakland. He received instructions from Thórdís (the designer) about positions and she took photos of beaches and piers in Snæfellsnes, were we hail from. And this is the result.”

She wanted to work with Claessen, a childhood friend, since she employs an urban or street style in many of her works, that really fitted with the film. Claessen also did the titles.

“The nominated posters are all great”, she adds, “and I would especially like to mention Ómar Örn Hauksson’s work (he designed the posters for Children, Parents, The Sunshine Boy and The Higher Force to name a few), he’s an exceptionally talented designer.”

Thórdarson is preparing a new documentary, called Fiend (Fíkill), an unconventional look at several people with drug addiction, who managed to turn a new leaf. The project has received development support from The Icelandic Film Centre.
