A message, loud and clear. From Twitch.

In a statement released today, a large number of Icelandic film and programme makers, including key directors, producers and writers, denounce public broadcaster RUV’s decision to slash programming of local docs, features and TV series and call for immidiate action. “The government and RUV’s management seem to have decided to destroy the Icelandic Film and TV industry” the statement says, and adds: “If Icelandic filmmaking is to be buried, it’s a huge political decision and should not be made without a debate.”

All the associations of Icelandic filmmakers have joined forces to fight the cutbacks, which also include a 23% cut of government film funding. An open meeting has been called tonight in a downtown Reykjavik hotel to discuss recent events and organize plans of action.

Filmsite Twitch covers these events in an article today under the headline “Icelandic Films no more? Could be.” The accompanying picture speaks volumes…
