Director Gísli Snær Erlingsson has been appointed Head of Singapore’s Puttnam School of Film, Lasalle College of the Arts. Erlingsson, a director of multiple-award winning features such as Benjamin Dove (trailer)and Ikingut (trailer) has been based in Tokyo for the past decade, where he ran his own Film & TV production company, making commercials and documentaries and distributing foreign films in Japan.
Launched in 2006 by Academy Award-winning film producer, Lord David Puttnam, The Puttnam School of Film offers the first BA(Hons) Film programme in Singapore. The programme was developed in accordance with the initiatives and vision of the Singapore government to develop Singapore into Global Media City, where media services and projects are created, developed, traded and distributed to an international market.
Erlingsson has for years lectured at various universities and films schools on filmmaking, directing and producing, and has been jury member of festivals such as the Berlin International Film Festival.
Asked about his views on this new challenge, Erlingsson replies: “I’m looking very much forward to continue building a film school of a world class standard and to graduate filmmakers with a strong vision of the world. These are very exciting times for Asian films, Asian filmmaking has been expanding very fast and has a lot to offer to world cinema. The Singapore government has in recent years been very supportive of the creative industries, so we have a great opportunity to do exciting work.”
Erlingsson is appointed from March 1st, and is currently putting the finishing touches on 21:21, a feature documentary on the importance of implementing learning that will nurture 21st century citizens. The film features Patrick Newell, Learning Activist of the 21 Foundation and includes a look at education from all over the world.
