The Contraband Trailer

The trailer for Baltasar Kormákur’s Contraband has arrived. The film, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi and Lukas Haas, will be out January 15th. This is a remake of Icelandic thriller Reykjavik Rotterdam, which had Kormákur in the starring role and also acting as producer.

Comedy Our Own Oslo Captures Critics and Audiences

Reynir Lyngdal’s debut feature Our Own Oslo (Okkar eigin Osló) premiered in Iceland on March 4th and has remained in the top spot since, with audiences reaching around 11.000 as of today. The comedy, starring Thorsteinn Gudmundsson (also screenwriter) and Brynhildur Gudjonsdóttir, has enjoyed generally favourable response from critics. Story depicts two polar opposites, dour engineer Haraldur and wacky bank employee Vilborg, trying to establish a relationship, with various people and events conspiring to prevent it from happening.

Stormland (Rokland) Premieres Today

Marteinn Thorsson’s Stormland (Rokland) premieres today in Iceland. It’s a black comedy, based on Hallgrímur Helgason’s novel of the same name, and deals with lone rebel Boddi (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) who lives in a small town in Northern Iceland. Critical reception is mixed.

Future of Hope Out September 3rd

Documentary Future of Hope by Henry Bateman and Heather Millard will be released nationwide by Sena from September 3rd. Film focuses on sustainability in Iceland, looking at Iceland, in the aftermath of the economic crash, as a microcosm for the rest of the world and features new developments in renewable energy, organic farming, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Inhale Trailer

Inhale, the US-produced film by Baltasar Kormákur, starring Dermot Mulroney and Diane Kruger, is out on DVD in Holland and the trailer (with Dutch subtitles) can be seen here. It’s not clear when the film will be released Stateside or in Europe. Cinematography and editing by fellow Icelanders Óttar Gudnason and Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir.

Backyard Wins Audience Prize at Skjaldborg Docfest

Backyard by Árni Sveinsson, a lively portrayal of the current Reykjavik music scene, took the audience prize at the fourth Skjaldborg Documentary Festival (May 21-24). Over twenty new Icelandic documentaries were screened in addition to three docs by Faroese director Katrin Ottarsdóttir, the festival’s guest of honour. A record number of guests descended on the Patreksfjördur fishing village in the northwest of Iceland this year to enjoy a unique blend of documentaries, nature and seafood feasts.

The writer/director spoke to Iceland Cinema Now about the possible allegorical nature of the film, the fun of ensemble pieces and the close relationship she enjoys with the cast. The interview was conducted in downtown Reykjavík in late March.
